Summary of Practice

Alan practised at the Bar of England & Wales for twenty years before being admitted to the Faculty of Advocates.  His practice consisted predominantly of family law, including issues of immigration and asylum, human rights, discrimination law and judicial review.  He is the only counsel practicing family law in both jurisdictions.  Based in Edinburgh, he retains a full tenancy in London Chambers, and is therefore able to appear in cross jurisdictional cases on both sides of the border.

His work has been largely High Court based enabling him to develop forensic skills in the examination of complex contested medical and psychiatric evidence.  He has appeared in a large number of seminal cases which have altered significant areas of law most recently on the balance between Arts 8 and 10 in respect of reporting restrictions preventing publication of information about his thirteen year old client alleged to be the father of a child.  He has a background of trade union involvement which established his interest in employment law.
