Summary of Practice

Angela practices predominantly at the civil bar, but also has considerable criminal experience. Throughout 2009, she has combined these skills by representing the Lord Advocate at the Fingerprint Inquiry into the Shirley McKie case.
The main focus of her practice is in the field of reparation, including personal injury claims, clinical and professional negligence. As a junior, Angela has acted in a significant number of high profile and complex cases. She represented the International Oil Pollution Compensation Fund in the long running claims arising out of the grounding of the Braer tanker in Shetland in 1993. These claims involved damage to property, breach of contract and economic loss. She has also acted as junior in a number of actions on behalf of the Police Federation, involving claims for personal injury.
Between 2003 and 2005 Angela was a Trial Advocate Depute prosecuting murders, rapes, historical sexual abuse cases and death by dangerous driving. In 2005 she was promoted to Senior Advocate Depute and regularly appeared in the Criminal Appeal Court and continued to prosecute complex and difficult cases. She also appeared in the Judicial Committee of the Privy Council as junior, and as lead counsel at two hearings on expenses. In addition, Angela has appeared as lead counsel before a full bench of 5 judges in two appeals.
In 2001 she attended the National Institute of Trial Advocacy course at Harvard and since then has taught regularly on the Faculty Foundation course for devils and on many other courses to practitioners working in a variety of areas. In 2008 Angela devised and delivered a comprehensive advocacy skills course (8 days) for Digby Brown, Solicitors focusing on all aspects of presenting personal injury claims. In 2009 she developed a training course for the Central Legal Office focusing on a medical negligence claim. She was also invited to develop the first Criminal Advocacy elective for Diploma students at the University of Edinburgh and has also taught on the Civil Advocacy Elective.
